Beth + Sam | July 2024
I tend to arrive at a wedding in my casuallls, outfit in a suit bag slung over my shoulder, ready to change when I get there. And nine times out of ten it’s a loo of some description. Often it’s a posh venue loo with fancy hand cream, sometimes it’s a cramped cubicle where I have to find a yoga pose suitable to get my trousers on without falling over, once it was a public toilet down the way from a wedding spot because when I got there I discovered it was just a stone temple with no facilities. My fault for not googling. When I arrived at Beth and Sam’s wedding - taking place in the back field of Beth’s family home - I was immediately embraced into the merriest of chaos. It was dogs bounding, kettle boiling, bodies tag teaming into the hair and make up chair, sisters, misters of sisters, offspring of sisters, music playing…and the bride in a thong looking for tit tape. What a babe.
Rather than a loo, this time I was given a whole bedroom to myself (one of Beth’s generous sisters), and I fully felt part of the fun Getting Wedding Ready part of the day as the family buzzed around and below me. I’m one of four sisters myself and I feel very at home amidst the gentle aroma of burning hair in the GHDs and mixed perfumes in the air. The getting ready is often the best part of the day isn’t it?
Although perhaps not in this case because Beth’s family know how to throw a party; she was the third sister to be getting married in the garden, so they’ve had plenty of practice.
Beth and Sam met at school and are proper sweethearts, in tune and madly in love, and their wedding was just joy from beginning to end. Colourful (the incredible hot pink-tone flowers given as a gift by the best man’s florist mum), musical (a brilliant brass band fan-fare as they departed down the aisle) and personal (Beth’s sister Jess read an incredible “chapters of your life” piece she’d written for the couple).
And not just colourful, musical and personal. Also proper party vibes with whooping from the incredible guests, a tequila rose shot for Beth and Sam as their first drink as husband and wife, and all in a setting that felt like a glamping spot at Glastonbury, complete with a banner that read Welcome to the party of the century.

In the buzz of the preparations I'd forgotten (for the first time!) to set up chairs at the front in case the bride and groom wanted to sit, so there was a funny moment where the groom and a guest grabbed a bench and carried it over, mid-ceremony. But Beth and Sam are such a chill couple it didn’t detract from the vibe - it actually fitted perfectly with the fun, relaxed feeling of being together in the field, getting them hitched.
There is something so deliciously warming about being embraced into a celebration that is all about belonging, and being made to feel - from minute dot - that you belong too.
